Australia’s housing affordability crisis will deepen with CFMEU expansion into new apartment builds pushing up costs by 30 per cent unless Labor intervenes and puts Australians first.

On Saturday the CFMEU announced they were expanding their influence into new apartment builds. Where the CFMEU influences goes, so do rising prices because of corrupt practices.

The CFMEU was placed into administration by Parliament because it was a criminal cartel advancing corruption at the expense of consumers.

Now, despite being in administration, the CFMEU has confirmed plans for a major push into residential housing developments.

The CFMEU has already imposed a 30 per cent apartment tax on residential buildings in Queensland and now intends to extend this nationwide. This tax threatens to kill off home ownership for millennials and zoomers.

The CFMEU sees first homeowner savings as their pay off for backing the government into office, Federal Labor should intervene to stop first homeowner savings being used as a piggy bank to be raided and finance corruption.

It also threatens private builders and developers, who have been abandoned by this Labor Government. The construction industry already leads the nation in insolvencies and this will get worse if the CFMEU is controlling residential construction.

Labor’s corporate housing agenda is empowering the CFMEU’s expansion into residential construction. The CFMEU continues to own 21 per cent of Cbus Super.

The Housing Probity Bill currently before the Senate will protect taxpayer funds from the corrupt CFMEU cartel.

Labor wants to pretend this isn’t happening. It is supposed to be the government for all Australians. It must ensure the CFMEU does not further infiltrate residential housing construction.
