Auditor General raises more housing questions than answers

The $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund has been operating for more than two years. It has apparently built a handful of homes, but it has definitely bought hundreds of houses.

It is entirely unclear what has happened with taxpayer funds and what exactly has been achieved. It is incredibly opaque.

Labor has created a monster that eats money and doesn’t build houses.

Bizarrely, according to the Auditor General, just $13 million was spent by the HAFF in 2024-25. Yet apparently, the HAFF spent an enormous $137 million in the first quarter of this financial year.

What does this say about the tender processes and the quality of spending which taxpayers are funding?

The government brags about how much money they’ve spent on housing - but they have nothing to show for it.

No government in Australian history has wasted so much money to build fewer houses and worsen the housing crisis. This government is spending almost $60 billion to build an average of 170,000 houses per year. The last Liberal government averaged 200,000 houses per year.

The Coalition is looking forward to probing these matters at Senate Estimates next week, where Labor has scheduled Housing Australia in the midnight slot.

Labor has also pushed the Treasury Housing Division from a daylight appearance to an after dark slot as well. Nothing to see here.
